The excavation at the Cairns in South Ronaldsay has developed over the last few years to become one of the most impressive in Orkney.

The dig focuses an Iron Age settlement centred on a large broch, around 22 metres in diameter, with evidence of later buildings in the area too. Finds at the site have included stone tools, pottery and a bronze pin, as well as a human jawbone.

It’s one of the most accessible sites in Orkney and is set in the stunning location of Windwick in South Ronaldsay. with beautiful views and walks in the immediate vicinity. Archaeologists are usually on site during June and July with official open days also held. Visitors are welcome throughout the course of the dig.
