Take a stroll through Stromness

If you’re visiting Orkney this summer, a walk through the streets of Stromness should definitely be on your itinerary.

But if you want to discover some of the secrets of this historic harbour town then booking a space on one of the new Stromness Strolls is highly recommended.

The guided walks will be held once a month between June and September, offering visitors the chance to explore Stromness in the company of a local guide. The route begins at the harbour before heading into the sheltered flagstone street where you’ll discover more about the town’s rich maritime heritage.

The strolls feature stops at the Pier Arts Centre and the Stromness Museum, with in-depth tours of each collection included. There will also be the chance to learn about the town’s fabulous independent shops, businesses, and eateries too.

It’s hoped the guided walks will let those taking part feel like a temporary local and get to know the town from a Stromnessian’s perspective. After a pilot event last year, the joint project between the town’s Community Development Trust, the Pier Arts Centre, and the Stromness Museum, will see four strolls on offer in 2024, beginning on 27th June.

The other walks will be held on 25th July, 1st August, and 5th September, with booking open now. There are only 12 tickets available per walk so be quick and reserve your space. Bespoke tours can also be arranged by contacting the team to discuss possible options.

Ruby Merriman is Development Officer with the Stromness Community Development Trust. “We really wanted to offer folk the opportunity to get to know Stromness and gain a better understanding of our community, whilst highlighting the heritage, creativity and culture in our thriving town.”

Tickets cost £40 each and can be booked online. Flat, comfortable footwear and appropriate clothing is recommended. Find out more via the Stromness Orkney website.
