Orkney's finest food and drink heads for national event

Eight Orkney Food & Drink members will be showcasing their products at a major trade fair event in Glasgow in the New Year.

The local contingent will be attending Scotland’s Speciality Food Show under the ‘Taste of Orkney’ banner in the city’s SEC between the 19th and 21st of January.

The event is a chance for the Orkney businesses to promote their products to buyers from shops, retailers and food halls from across the country.

The Orkney Food & Drink group will be made up of Barony Mills, The Island Smokery, J. Gow Rum, Jollys of Orkney, Orkney Bakery, Orkney Craft Vinegar, Orkney Creamery and the Westray Bakehouse.

They’ll be joined by nine Creative Orkney members who will be attending Scotland’s Trade Fair, which runs alongside the food and drink event.

Project Manager for Orkney Food, Drink and Crafts, Edgar Balfour, said: “Orkney is well represented at these trade fairs, which continue to play an important role in promoting our members and their products to a wider audience. Orkney is full of talented producers in both the food and drink and creative sectors, and there is always a very positive response to the local stands, both from existing customers and new buyers.

Attendance at the event is being supported by an Orkney Marketing funding package. An initiative between Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Orkney Islands Council, Orkney Marketing funding is available to projects that focus on bringing local companies together in joint promotions, ensuring the islands maintain a strong presence in competitive markets such as food and drink, the creative industries and renewable energy.

The Promoting Orkney project has been part financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community Orkney LEADER 2014-2020.
