Orkney’s winter wildlife attractions are the focus of a beautiful short film commissioned by the RSPB.
‘Discover Wild Orkney: Winter’ is the first video of a four-part series based on the seasons in the islands, focusing on all aspects of Orkney’s nature and wildlife.
The films were shot by Orcadian wildlife cameraman Raymond Besant, who has contributed to BBC Natural World, Springwatch and ‘Highlands – Scotland’s Wild Heart’. The original score was composed by local musician James Watson, with the editing carried out by Orkney filmmaker Mark Jenkins from Stromness-based SpliceFilm.
The film features birdlife and sealife as they battle the elements, with wild weather and stormy seas dominating the short days in Orkney over the winter months. The islands are a haven for wildlife all year round but become an important home to divers, grebes and seaducks in winter.
The films were commissioned through Cinécosse by RSPB Scotland’s 'Enjoy Wild Orkney' project, funded by the RSPB, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund.
