We’ve picked out some of our favourite pieces that you can buy directly from our Creative Orkney and Taste of Orkney members.

Innovation is definitely at the heart of the work of Lindstruments, one of Creative Orkney’s newest members. Donald WG Lindsay is the man behind the business, and he’s created the Lindsay System Chanter, a fully retuneable Scottish smallpipe chanter, designed and made right here in Orkney. It features more than two octaves and no keys, and its return-bore design extends the range from low D to high D while retaining standard Scottish smallpipe fingering from low G to high A. The chanter sits at the centre of Lindstruments’ work and has even been heard in film, including Orkney-set The Outrun. Each chanter is made to order and includes an introductory online session with Donald.

The latest beer from the Orkney Brewery is a mighty drink inspired by possibly the most famous Norse god of them all. Thor’s Hammer is a double hopped IPA forged with Chinook, Centennial, and Columbus hops. The result is a golden, bold beer bursting with lemon, tropical fruit, grapefruit, and pine flavours. The double rounds of dry hopping give the brew a 5.1% ABV – a strong finish worthy of the gods!

A beautiful new book by local textile artist, Rosalind Johansson, celebrates some of the famous scenery and attractions of the Northern Isles. ‘Quilt: Inspired by Orkney and Shetland’ showcases her work, with handmade quilts of all shapes and sizes depicting quintessential island scenes, from ancient stone circles and Viking heritage, to orcas, sea birds, and dramatic landscapes. The book also features a mixture of quilting instructions and anecdotes from Rosalind's many years associated with Orkney and Shetland. It's beautifully illustrated and weaves together original textile designs with fascinating stories, local history, and personal insights.

The latest coffee from Orkney’s Lochside Roasters is a single origin roast from the mountains of El Salvador. This espresso uses Red Bourbon beans grown 1,300 metres above sea level. They’ve been carefully roasted here in Orkney to bring out their natural sweetness and depth, with tasting notes of dark chocolate, rum, and plum. The result is a full-bodied and characterful espresso, with a balance of dark chocolate, dark fruit, and a subtle booziness.

Stromness-based artist, Jeanne Bouza Rose, has been producing calendars based on her beautiful paintings of Orkney since 2014, and her latest edition features striking depictions of our big skies and elemental landscape. Orkney’s ancient stone circles also feature in Jeanne’s 2027 calendar, which is 8”x 8” with a spiral, so you can take your calendar wherever you go.

Part of the new Scapa Distillery Core Range, this 21-year-old cask strength whisky showcases the depth and character developed through more than two decades of maturation. Crafted at the distillery overlooking Scapa Flow, the whisky delivers layers of orchard fruit, honey sweetness, and warming spice, alongside notes of homemade apricot jam. This single batch release has been matured in American oak barrels and offers the chance to experience Scapa’s whisky in its purest form.

If you’re looking for bespoke fused glass art for someone special in your life then Nonnie Dingwall at MadeItOrkney is just the person to contact. Nonnie crafts stunning work in her East Mainland studio, liaising closely with customers to create the perfect piece for them. One recent project saw an image of the Mallaig lifeboat turned into a beautiful glass design, complete with different shades to capture the depth of sea and sky.

If you’re looking to get your Christmas shopping underway early then this special gift set from The Orkney Distillery could be the ideal present for friends and family. You can enjoy the sweet notes of Fara, a non-peated blended malt whisky, alongside the gentle smokiness of Rysa, a lightly peated blended malt, as well as the distillery’s spiced rum, Man O’ Hoy. The set, featuring three 5cl bottles, is the perfect introduction to the Orkney Distillery range and a great gift for whisky and rum enthusiasts alike.

The Island Smokery has been producing award-winning smoked and flavoured cheese in Stromness for more than 20 years, but the team is still coming up with delicious new flavours for cheese lovers to savour. The latest addition to the range is Smoked Cheddar with Mustard, perfect for anyone who wants a bit of a kick with their cheese selection. It’s made with a blend of English and wholegrain mustards and comes with a wonderful balance of creaminess, warmth, and smoke. It would be perfect for a mac and cheese, or in a toasted sandwich.

This fun and colourful collection of Orkney tea towels is an excellent addition to any kitchen. Designed in the islands by Elsa Tait, they feature scenes instantly recognisable to any islander. Elsa’s sheep tea towel is inspired by lambing season and the agricultural lifestyle in Orkney. Elsa’s highland cow design is her take on the shaggy characters which can be found throughout the islands. Both towels are based on Elsa’s own illustrations and are hand-printed, with a weaved polyester and cotton texture, and are 40 x 70cm.

This collection of rings from Stronsay jeweller, Marion Miller, is inspired by the ever-changing colours of the North Sea that surrounds her island home. Marion has been making these pieces since she began studying jewellery in London in the mid-90s, but her work constantly changes in appearance and combinations, with aquamarines and rainbow moonstones taking centre stage, just like the sea, weather, and tides.
