New products from Orkney

Check out some of the latest creations from our local producers.

As summer begins to slide into autumn you might think Orkney’s talented food, drink and crafts makers will be shutting up shop, eager for a few weeks off before the big build towards the festive season.

But that’s not how things work here in the islands! No, our producers have been grafting and crafting away in the background, creating new products and pieces that are ready to hit the shelves.

We’ve rounded up a few of our favourite items which you can buy from our Creative Orkney and Orkney Food & Drink members.

Best known for its award-winning gins and its recent foray into the whisky market, the Orkney Distillery has still found time to launch its first ever rum. Man O’ Hoy – named after Hoy’s famous sea stack – is a spiced rum full of global spices and local botanicals, including Angelica Archangelica, cultivated in collaboration with the Agronomy Institute at Orkney College. The rum itself has bright notes of aniseed and spice on the nose which give way to a smooth palate of warm vanilla, orange marmalade, and angelica root.

Creativity is never an issue at Michael Sinclair’s woodturning workshop, and his latest design only confirms that. He’s transformed former wooden bowling and carpet bowls into beautiful, tactile pieces, including Neolithic-inspired ‘petrospheres’, as well as a small ring bowl which comes complete with a Kintsugi repair using 24k gold leaf. The bowling balls were made from lignum vitae, an extremely hard and heavy timber which is now protected. Michael scours online marketplaces for these balls to recycle them and give them new life as hand-turned objects.

The latest product from the innovative team at the Golden Slipper Brewing Company is a sweet and creamy kombucha with hints of smooth vanilla, toasted almond, and fragrant hay notes. Meadowsweet Cream Soda’s main ingredient is the meadowsweet plant that grows in damp, wet places and can be found across the islands. It boasts a sweet aroma but it also has natural properties that can help ease pain, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation. Brewed right here in Orkney, it’s an exciting addition to the growing Golden Slipper range.

Orkney hosted the 2025 International Island Games in July which saw thousands of athletes, officials, and supporters from around the world arrive here for an incredible week of sport and community. Aurora Jewellery launched this special tartan to celebrate the event, inspired by the vibrant colours of the Orkney 2025 logo. Each colour reflects the essence of the islands – including the sea, landscape, culture, heritage, and spirit. It was woven in lambswool by Lochcarron of Scotland and crafted into a variety of accessories – the perfect reminder of a landmark week in Orkney.

The International Island Games aimed to inspire the next generation of Orkney sporting talent, but it also shone a light on our fabulous makers too. Jodie Brown, one of the skilled jewellers at Sheila Fleet Jewellery, won a competition to design the Orkney 2025 Island Games medals with her standing stones concept. She also developed a brand-new Sheila Fleet collection based on her design which has become Orkney Spirit. The latest addition to the range is this stunning 9ct gold dress pendant, complete with the iconic interpretation of Orkney’s Neolithic monoliths.

J. Gow Rum is celebrating autumn in style with the launch of the first ever UK produced eight-year-old rum. Hidden Depths Vol 3 has been aged in an ex-Orkney bere whisky/black portent cask and has been bottled at cask strength. The distillery says it’s an evolution of volumes 1 and 2, with an extra three years of ageing and deeper, richer, and more complex flavours. Each bottle is numbered and comes with a black printed cloth bag. It launches on 4 October with mailing list pre-orders going live a few days earlier. It will also be previewed at J. Gow Rum’s ‘Cask Strength & Cocktails’ event at the Orkney Food & Drink Festival in September, where you can be the first to taste test it and pre-order a bottle before anyone else.

Orkney jewellery designer Alison Moore has always been inspired by the shore and sea surrounding the islands, and her latest range brings the beauty of beachcombing to life. The Shell Collector is full of delicate handmade jewellery cast in precious metals from real shells found on beaches in Orkney, including treasured cowries and tiny periwinkles. The collection includes necklaces, earrings, rings and more, and is the perfect reminder of day on island shores.
