New whiskies hit the shelves in Orkney

Orkney’s two largest whisky distilleries have unveiled new looks and new releases this month.

Scapa Distillery has launched its signature range, its first ever collection of aged Single Malts, with the new 10, 16, and 21-year-old whiskies joining the permanent Scapa range for the first time.

Each Single Malt is matured in first-fill American oak casks and they’re centred around the tropical and fruity notes that the distillery is famous for.

There are new bottle and gift box designs for each expression too. They’re available to buy at the Scapa Distillery shop on the outskirts of Kirkwall and will be on offer at visitor experiences at the Scapa Noust, the distillery’s spectacular tasting room. The collection will be available globally via The Whisky Exchange from mid-November 2024.

Meanwhile, Highland Park has rolled out refreshed packaging across its core range of 12, 15, and 18-year-old Single Malt Scotch whiskies. According to the distillery, the new boxes and bottles are inspired ‘by the natural beauty and creative spirit’ of Orkney.

Launched in October, the new packaging pays tribute to Orkney’s light and climate with a fresh, bright, and contemporary colour palette. The labels feature flecks of heather – a nod to Highland Park’s unique flavour – and the boxes have a subtle wood-grain pattern, inspired by the distillery’s use of sherry-seasoned oak casks.

As part of the redesign, Highland Park is also unveiling new packaging across the global travel retail exclusive editions of 14, 16, and 18-year-old whiskies.

It all comes at a busy time for Orkney’s burgeoning whisky industry, with two other local producers embarking on their Single Malt journeys.

Both The Deerness Distillery and The Orkney Distillery have launched blended malts ahead of their own bespoke Single Malts, which are currently in production.
