Where can I see puffins? How do I visit Skara Brae and Maeshowe? When do local shops open?...just some of the questions a special new section on the Orkney.com website hopes to answer.
The new Today feature on the website – the main portal for information on Orkney – has been created to offer an instant insight on what’s happening daily in the islands, along with weather and tide forecasts, quick links to accommodation and travel, and answers to the most common queries from visitors.
Orkney.com, which is funded by Orkney Islands Council (OIC) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) through the Orkney Marketing programme, attracts an average of over 100,000 visitors each month. The site provides a host of content on Orkney’s history, culture, wildlife, arts and industries, in addition to itineraries for visitors, travel and accommodation information, business listings and jobs pages.
Ruth Kirkpatrick, HIE’s Orkney area team leader, said: “The Orkney.com website continues to go from strength to strength in terms of its content and visitor traffic, but we wanted to create a simple and impactful Today page to provide a quick insight on daily events, and easy access to key information. We worked with partners, VisitScotland and Destination Orkney, to identify the most popular questions asked by visitors on a daily basis and thought it would be helpful to collate answers to those in one easily accessible place. We’re hopeful the new page will prove useful for anyone visiting Orkney, but there’s also some handy information on there for local folk too.”
The new Today page is now live on Orkney.com. QR codes linking directly to the page have also been created and are being made available in different formats for businesses to display.
