Come and meet the MÓTI Collective

An exciting new group of Orkney artists will come together this month to showcase their work – and the benefits of working together.

Named ‘MÓTI’, after the Norse word meaning ‘towards, to meet’, the collective is made up of young Orkney-based graduates. They bring together experience of studying in places as far afield as Kirkwall, Glasgow, Skye, London and Toronto.

The collective’s first exhibition will open in the Orkney Museum on Saturday 5th November and will span a variety of disciplines – from photography, painting and printmaking; to textiles, sculpture and installation art.

On show will be work from Louise Barrington, Susan Boyd, Kristyn Grieve, Mary Grieve, Frances Scott and Sigurd Smith. Kristyn, Sigurd and Susan all completed a BA (Hons) Fine Art Textiles at Orkney College, with Louise both studying and tutoring there at the moment.

The exhibition is titled ‘Introducing MÓTI’, with the individual work focused on the theme of ‘Time’ to reflect the transition from student to emerging artist each member of the collective has experienced.

As well as bringing a new approach to showcasing some of the artistic talent in Orkney, the collective aims to provide a support network for members. It’s hoped this group environment will help create momentum after graduating, despite the geographical gap between Orkney and creative hubs across the UK.

According to the collective though, this is just the first step. The goal is to host more shows both in Orkney and further afield, so make sure you meet ‘MÓTI’ at the very start.

The exhibition opens in the Orkney Museum at 10.30am on the 5th of November, with an exhibition tour and artist talks starting at 11.15am. A closing event will take place on 26th November at 2pm, along with a second exhibition tour. Refreshments will be provided at both events by MÓTI.

Follow MÓTI on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The collective has been set up with backing from the National Creative Learning Network.
