Great Taste Award stars heading for Orkney

Four talented Orkney food and drink makers are celebrating the latest local success at the annual Great Taste Awards.

Donaldsons of Orkney, the Golden Slipper Brewing Company, Jollys of Orkney, and the Orkney Gin Company have all claimed coveted stars for their products.

Organised by the Guild of Fine Foods, the awards are the world’s largest food and drink accreditation scheme, with entrants judged by a panel of more than 500 industry experts ranging from chefs and food writers, to buyers and retailers. Thousands of products from across the UK are put forward for consideration every year.

Kirkwall-based butchers, Donaldsons of Orkney, saw triple success this time around, winning two stars for its Hot Smoked Salmon Pate and its Spiced Beef. The team also scooped a star for its Hot Smoked Chicken Wrapped in Bacon.

One of Orkney’s newest producers, the Golden Slipper Brewing Company, marked its first Great Taste Awards in style, winning two stars for its Dry-Hopped Kombucha. Its Pineappleweed Kombucha also came home with a star.

Local seafood firm Jollys of Orkney won a star for its Hand Sliced Smoked Salmon, part of its new Orkney Smokehouse range, while the Orkney Gin Company – a regular winner at the awards – saw three of its products recognised. The Burray producer’s Christmas Old Tom gin, Orkney Akvavit, and Sule Skerry Gin all claimed a star each.
