Four talented Orkney food and drink producers are celebrating success at the latest Great Taste Awards.
The Orkney Gin Company, Humes, Stockan’s Oatcakes, and Orkney Distilling Ltd have all received coveted Great Taste stars, which they’ll now be able to proudly display on their winning products.
The annual Great Taste Awards are judged by a panel of 500 industry experts and attract thousands of entries from across the UK.
Burray-based Orkney Gin Company received three stars for its Orkney Akvavit, one of only 241 products to claim the top award. It’s the second time it has received three stars since its launch, with the judges describing the Scandinavian-inspired spirit as ‘clean, fresh, warming and spicy’.
It’s the latest award for Orkney Akvavit, which was also named as the best in the world at the World Drinks Awards earlier this year. The company’s Aatta Gin also claimed one-star at the Great Taste Awards. It means the business now has ‘Great Taste Producer’ status, having won consecutive titles at the event since 2017.
Family-run Humes had triple success this year, receiving two stars for both its Hot Oak Smoked Salmon and Peppered Oak Smoked Mackerel, and one star for its Smoked Salmon Pate.
Stockan’s Oatcakes also claimed one star for one of its newest products, its Orkney Heritage Spelt Wheat, Herb & Pepper Oatcakes.
Orkney Distilling Ltd rounded off the local success story at the awards, coming home with one star for its Kirkjuvagr Arkh-Angell ‘Storm Strength’ Orkney gin.
