Vat of Kirbister
Stronsay
KW17 2AG
This is simply one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in Orkney.
The Vat of Kirbister is the jewel in Stronsay's crown. A stunning natural rock arch, this delicate structure is a real island highlight.
Head to the east side of the island and you'll find a small lay-by at the start of a track towards the coast. The gentle stroll to the sea and along the low cliffs is worth the trip itself, but it gets better.
You'll soon come to the Vat itself, perhaps the finest rock arch in Orkney. The collapsed sea cave has left an atmospheric amphitheatre, full of the sights and sounds of nature. Visit during the summer to see the Vat surrounded by wonderful wildflowers and lush green grass. Seabirds skim the surface of the sea as they glide in and out of the arch too.
Don't be put off from a visit throughout the seasons though - it's a special stretch of coastline all year round. Our Vat of Kirbister & Lamb Head walking route is the perfect way to explore the area.
