St Catherine's Bay
Stronsay
This sweeping bay on Stronsay’s west coast is one of the finest beaches in Orkney.
Visit St Catherine’s Bay at low tide and you’ll be greeted by a crescent of beautiful sand. The views here are quite special, looking out over many of Orkney’s other islands, including Shapinsay, Egilsay, Wyre, Rousay and the mainland. You can even pick out the Hoy hills on the horizon.
No visit here is the same. If the tide is high and weather wild, expect the waves to come crashing up into the dunes. At other times you’ll find local folk collecting spoots (razor fish) after the sea has retreated.
One of best things about time spent in Stronsay is the chance to explore its beaches, and St Catherine’s Bay should be at the top of your list.
