If you want to find out more about Shapinsay’s rich history, the island’s Heritage Centre should be your first port of call.

Newly-refurbished and found on the first floor of The Smithy Café & Restaurant, the Heritage Centre covers various different aspects of life in Shapinsay, with topics including farming, social life, wartime memories, schools, and shops.

Thanks to the renovation, new interpretation boards sit alongside a fantastic array of photographs and artefacts, including farming implements and archaeological displays.

QR codes are available throughout so visitors can listen to stories, memories and poems, and iPads are available too.

A small craft shop is also open, offering locally-made goods and knitwear.

Check online for the latest opening times – find the Shapinsay Heritage Arts & Crafts group on Facebook, or visit the website.
