The Pier Store in Rousay helps tell the story of the island's history and heritage, complementing the neighbouring Rousay Heritage Centre.

The Pier Store stands at the top of the old pier and was originally built in 1871 by General Frederick William Trail-Burroughs. He established the Rousay, Egilsay and Rendall Steam Navigation Company, and the Pier Store was used to hold cargo being transported to and from the island.

After falling into disuse, the Rousay, Egilsay & Wyre Development Trust bought the building in 2019 with plans to refurbish and open it as a community-run heritage attraction. The new-look Pier Store officially reopened in 2025 as a display space featuring heritage artefacts from the island's domestic, maritime, and agricultural past. The exhibits tell the story of Rousay's history, transport links, and its people.

It's well worth popping in for a look alongside the Rousay Heritage Centre during your time visiting this fascinating island.
