The company was established in 2020 as part of the ReFLEX Orkney Project – a four-year project funded by Innovate UK from 2019 to 2023 with the ambition of pioneering an integrated, affordable, low-carbon energy system for the future.
The ReFLEX (Responsive Flexibility) project concept was to demonstrate an ‘integrated energy system’ (IES) that would coordinate and combine multiple energy assets across electricity, transport and heat.
Funded by UKRI through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, the project was led by the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) with cross-sector partners including Aquatera, SMS, Community Energy Scotland, Heriot-Watt University and Orkney Islands Council.
The project aimed to provide affordable solutions to decarbonisation for the community and to interlink local electricity, transport and heat networks into one controllable, overarching system, digitally connecting distributed and variable renewable generation to flexible demand.
ReFLEX Orkney Ltd was established by project partner Aquatera Ltd, and has taken forward the aims of the project long term and to help accelerate decarbonisation in Orkney.
Orkney is already a net exporter of renewable energy, with over 100% of the islands’ yearly electricity demand met by renewable generation. ReFLEX Orkney will continue to strengthen Orkney’s global standing as a low-carbon centre of excellence.
