Most islands in Orkney can boast an ancient standing stone, and Shapinsay is no exception.

The Mor Stein is thought to date back around 5000 years to the Neolithic, placing it alongside the likes of the Ring of Brodgar, the Standing Stones of Stenness, and the Stone of Setter.

This solitary stone stands at approximately ten feet high, although it was possibly a touch taller in the past – at some point in recent history it was knocked down and split before being reinstalled.

You’ll find a picnic table nearby providing the perfect spot for a refreshment or two if you’re touring the island by bike or on foot.
