Mill Loch
Eday
Orkney
This small loch sits in the centre of Eday’s north end and is a haven for birdlife throughout the year.
The Mill Loch covers just 24 acres but it more than makes up for its size with the variety of species you can see here.
It’s one of the most important breeding sites in the UK for red-throated divers, with sometimes almost a dozen pairs nesting each year. These beautiful birds arrive during the summer months with their calls heard amongst the dense vegetation surrounding the loch – the perfect place for a diver to hide away.
Over the years the likes of teal, mallard and greylag geese have used the loch to bring up their young too. Migrants including redwings, fieldfares and finches are often spotted during the spring and autumn, with winter visitors including teal and widgeon.
There’s plenty of other habitats in the area, such as bog, marshland and heath, offering numerous wildlife-spotting opportunities. There’s an excellent hide at the loch which provides the perfect vantage point, and the best way to watch on without disturbing the birds.
