Stronsay is famous for its stunning beaches, and this beautiful stretch of sand is no exception.

Mill Bay is found on the island’s east coast, a huge, u-shaped bay with a strip of golden sand at its head. The beach here is often spotless – it’s thought a sand bar offshore helps divert any litter in the sea elsewhere.

Park up by the nearby derelict mill and cross the road to clamber down to the beach. The grassy bank offers shelter from a westerly wind whilst you wander along the sand. Keep your eye open for birdlife here, and you’ll often spot seals out in the shallow water too.

Mill Bay is also home to the Mermaid’s Chair, a small rock formation around halfway along the beach. Legend has it that a seat here will enable you to see into the future.

Even if that doesn’t quite work, you’ll want to stop somewhere on the sand just to soak up some of Stronsay’s finest scenery.
