Maraquoy is an ideal base for archaeology, birdwatching, diving, walking and cycling, or if you just want to chill out and get away for a quiet break, this is an ideal location.
Maraquoy has beautiful panoramic views over Scapa Flow, the Hoy and Orphir hills and the lochs of Stenness and Harray. Set in a quiet location surrounded by fields, with Stromness only a 15 minute walk away. Enjoy the late afternoon and evening sun, as it settles on the private patio areas and sheltered gardens at the rear of the cottages. Find an abundance of wildlife on your doorstep and you can watch hares, curlews and owls in the surrounding fields, from the comfort of the sitting room window.
Spend a day in the picturesque, fishing town of Stromness, where you can visit the renowned award-winning Pier Arts Centre, the museum, stroll the quaint alleyways and piers, accessed from the cobbled streets or take a boat from the harbour across to the island of Hoy. The local swimming pool, badminton court, playing fields and fitness suite are within easy walking distance and the ferry terminal and golf course are only a 3 minute drive away.
There are good walks down to the beach at the Bu and up the hill at the back of Maraquoy which are ideal for painters and photographers. The Northern Lights appear here in spectacular array and unpolluted by artificial light in the night sky. Astronomy and sky observation is spectacular from this location. The song of seals from the Bu and peewits and oyster catchers can often be heard.
The Historic Sites of Maeshowe, Ring of Brodgar, Ness of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness are only a 10 minute drive away.
There is plenty parking at Maraquoy, with both cottages being completely renovated and extended for the 2016 season.
