Part of a fascinating trail through ancient history in Orkney.

The Knowe of Yarso is just one of many archaeological attractions in Rousay. Found perched up on the hillside, the cairn commands stunning views over Eynhallow Sound and the Orkney mainland.

This 5000-year-old chambered cairn was excavated in the early 1930s with the remains of at least 29 people discovered inside. 17 skulls were lined up side by side, similar to other sites, including the nearby Midhowe. Archaeologists also found the bones of red deer and flint and pottery, some of which suggests the cairn was in use until the late 2000s BC.
