Even for an island like Sanday, with its many wonderful beaches, Doun Helzie is a very special place.

Pronounced ‘Doon Helly’, this beach is tucked away on Sanday’s south east coast and is as close to a secret stretch of sand as you’ll find in Orkney.

To reach it, head north from the ferry terminal and follow the main road around the right-hand bend at Braeswick. Around 500m from here you’ll see a minor road heading right towards the bay at Stove. Follow this until you come to an electricity sub-station where you can park your car. Head back up the way you came for around 250 metres where you’ll find the track to the beach on your right.

The adventure isn’t over yet. Follow the track until you reach a metal gate – don’t go through it, but turn right and follow the marked and fenced route, which takes a sharp left turn towards the cliffs. Carefully follow the waymarks along the clifftop for 100 metres or so until you find the track down to the beach.

The best advice is to visit at low tide to get the full Doun Helzie experience. Head south to find rock arches and a series of caves that are perfect for exploring. There is some spectacular geology in the area, and keep your eyes open for evidence of otters too – their tracks and spraint are often seen here.

There’s a good chance you’ll have the place to yourself, only adding to the feeling that you’ve discovered this hidden beach. If you’re on the go early, a summer morning sunrise here is a truly unique experience.
