Orkney’s north isles are home to some stunning beaches, and this small stretch of sand in Egilsay is no different.

Canquoy is a small beach that can be found on east coast of Egilsay. At first glance, with turquoise waters and white sand in front of you, you might think you’ve been transported to the Outer Hebrides.

There are lovely views across to Eday and beautiful big skies to soak in. Rocky outcrops are perfect for exploring and there are plenty of places for paddling. Remember to look out to sea to check if local seals are keeping a watchful eye on you as you wander on the beach.

The route here leads you past the island’s community centre, where you can stop off for a self-service tea or coffee (an honesty box is available), and through part of the Onziebust Nature Reserve. Keep your eye open for the elusive call of a corncrake, or maybe a drumming snipe on your way to the beach.
