One of Orkney’s most impressive remaining wartime structures, Buchanan Battery played a vital role in the defence of Scapa Flow.

Partnered with Balfour Battery, across the main entrance to the Flow at Hoxa in South Ronaldsay, the men stationed in Flotta kept a close eye on shipping movements and U-boat threats throughout World War Two.

The battery was made up of a director tower, shelters, searchlight positions, engine room, accommodation huts and more.

Its location offers a real insight into life here during the war, and the challenges faced by the thousands of men and women that were based in Flotta.

As is the case with most of Orkney’s wartime remains, the buildings here are incredibly fragile – don’t be tempted to explore inside.
