But the patches of woodland we do have across the islands tend to be very special. That's certainly the case for Berriedale in Hoy.

It's the UK's most northerly native woodland and a reminder of what would have once covered most of Orkney. Berriedale is found at the heart of the RSPB's Hoy reserve and is a small oasis of green in the middle of the island's moorland and glens.

Head into this hidden gem to find various species of trees, including downy birch, rowan, aspen and willow. The wider area features some wonderful wildlife too - expect mountain hares, white-tailed eagles, great skuas, red-throated divers and much more.
