The Old Library
8 Laing Street
Kirkwall’s former Carnegie library building has been given a new lease of life as the home of Grooves Records, The Sound Archive, Exhibition Room + Shop. It is also where you will find Archive Coffee, which serves delicious fresh food, great coffee and fantastic home bakes.
The food at Archive Coffee combines contemporary cuisine with classic dishes, all of which use the best locally sourced produce. Our talented young chef, Gary Sutherland, regularly refreshes the menu, offering a selection of main meals and lighter options. Food is served on the premises all day and we also have a selection of salads & sandwiches to take away.
We have two house coffees, one by Dear Green from Glasgow and our own Archive Espresso by The Orkney Roastery, plus a regularly changing guest coffee. You can also choose from a wide selection of Clipper teas, hot chocolate and soft drinks. Our coffee is available to take away and you can buy retail packs of beans or ground coffee to use at home. All our baking is produced on the premises by Rebecca Harrold, whose cakes and cupcakes have been a sensation across our social media feeds. You can enjoy these sweet treats in the spacious surroundings of our café or buy some to take home and share with friends and family.
As well as great coffee, we are also passionate about craft beer. We offer draft beers from Swannay Brewery, Brewdog & Cromarty Brewing Co., plus many more craft beers in bottles and cans. We stock all the local gins and in February 2018 hosted the first Orkney Gin Festival. We have a full off sales licence so you can stock up on beer and spirits at competitive prices. We host regular wine & beer tasting evenings, which match the drinks to specially created menus.
At regular times throughout the year Archive Coffee becomes The Sound Archive at night, hosting a variety of musical acts across all genres. Enjoy our selection of beers, wines & spirits as you listen to the best live music. Check our social media for details of upcoming gigs & events.
