Job Description – Remote Foover Technician – Orkney

Position: Remote Foover Technician – Orkney
Department/Function: Aquaculture / ROV Services
Location: Orkney
Reports To: Regional Services Lead / UCO Management
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday

1. Company

Underwater Contracting Ltd (UCO) is an Aberdeen-based provider of ROV systems, subsea equipment and specialist underwater services to the Aquaculture, Offshore Energy and Construction industries.

UCO has developed the Foover Mort Recovery System, an ROV-based solution used extensively within the aquaculture industry for the efficient removal of mortalities from fish farming operations.

As our fleet and operations continue to grow, we are looking for a locally based technician to support and manage UCO’s Foover systems and associated equipment operating across Orkney.

2. Job Purpose

The Remote Foover Technician will act as UCO’s local technical representative in Orkney and will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation, maintenance and availability of Foover systems and associated ROV equipment deployed with our clients across the islands.

The primary objective of the role is to ensure equipment remains operational, well maintained and available to our clients, responding quickly to technical issues and carrying out planned preventative maintenance to minimise equipment downtime.

The role will involve working independently across multiple client sites while maintaining regular communication with UCO’s wider technical and operational teams.

Previous ROV experience is advantageous but is not essential, as full training on UCO’s Foover and ROV systems will be provided. A practical mechanical, electrical, marine, agricultural or engineering background would be particularly suitable.

3. Key Accountabilities

The role is responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance on Foover systems, ROVs, pumps and associated equipment.
  • Responding to equipment faults and breakdowns at client sites.
  • Diagnosing mechanical, electrical and operational faults and carrying out repairs where appropriate.
  • Carrying out routine inspections and identifying potential issues before they result in equipment downtime.
  • Testing equipment following maintenance and repair.
  • Maintaining appropriate levels of spare parts, consumables and service equipment locally.
  • Coordinating with UCO’s Aberdeen team regarding technical issues, spares, repairs and equipment movements.
  • Supporting the mobilisation, installation and commissioning of Foover systems.
  • Assisting clients with the correct operation and routine care of UCO equipment.
  • Providing technical assistance and practical support to client personnel.
  • Delivering equipment training and refresher training where required.
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance, service and equipment records.
  • Reporting equipment defects, damage and recurring technical issues to UCO management.
  • Assisting with equipment upgrades and modifications.
  • Maintaining UCO equipment and work areas to a high standard.
  • Liaising professionally with clients, subcontractors and other stakeholders.
  • Supporting other UCO ROV and technical activities within Orkney where required.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability, operation and client support.

4. Qualifications & Experience

Candidates should have a good standard of education together with a practical technical or engineering background.

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Mechanical maintenance and repair.
  • Electrical maintenance and fault finding.
  • Marine engineering.
  • Agricultural or plant machinery.
  • Pumps and pumping systems.
  • Hydraulic systems.
  • ROVs or subsea equipment.
  • Industrial equipment maintenance.
  • Aquaculture equipment.

Previous experience working with ROVs or Foover systems is not required, and specific product training will be provided by UCO.

A full UK driving licence is required due to the need to travel between client sites.

5. Technical Competencies

The successful candidate should:

  • Be mechanically and technically minded.
  • Be comfortable using hand and power tools.
  • Have good practical fault-finding skills.
  • Be capable of carrying out routine equipment servicing and maintenance.
  • Have a basic understanding of electrical systems and electrical safety.
  • Be comfortable working with pumps, hoses, mechanical assemblies and associated equipment.
  • Be capable of using computers, email and electronic maintenance/reporting systems.
  • Be able to follow technical instructions, maintenance procedures and risk assessments.
  • Be capable of working independently and making sensible technical decisions when attending client sites.

6. Personal Attributes

Due to the remote nature of the position, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate:

  • A strong practical and hands-on approach.
  • Reliability and personal responsibility.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Initiative and willingness to take ownership of technical issues.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A professional and customer-focused approach.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills.
  • The ability to prioritise work across multiple sites.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a wider team despite being remotely based.

7. Location & Working Pattern

This is a locally based position in Orkney, and applicants should live on Orkney or be willing to relocate to the islands.

The normal working pattern will be Monday to Friday.

The role will involve regular travel between client sites throughout Orkney. Due to the operational nature of aquaculture equipment, there may occasionally be a requirement to provide additional support outside normal working hours by prior agreement.

8. Training & Development

UCO will provide comprehensive training on:

  • Foover Mort Recovery Systems.
  • ROV operation and maintenance.
  • Foover pumps and associated equipment.
  • Fault diagnosis and repair.
  • Planned preventative maintenance.

10. Quality, Health & Safety

The Remote Foover Technician will be expected to:

  • Comply at all times with UCO’s Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental procedures.
  • Follow client site rules and procedures.
  • Take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of those around them.
  • Use appropriate PPE and ensure work is carried out safely.
  • Stop work where conditions or activities are considered unsafe.
  • Report incidents, near misses, equipment damage and safety concerns promptly.
  • Proactively challenge unsafe practices or breaches of company procedures.

11. Environmental Responsibilities

All employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner which supports UCO’s environmental commitments and to minimise environmental impact when carrying out maintenance, servicing and operational activities.

12. The Role

This position would suit someone who enjoys practical engineering and wants a varied role where they can take ownership of equipment and client support within their local area.

The successful candidate will become UCO’s local technical presence in Orkney, supported by our wider engineering and operations teams in Aberdeen and the Northern Isles.

The role provides an opportunity to develop specialist knowledge of ROV and aquaculture technology while working independently in a growing part of UCO’s operations.
