An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, well-organised and dynamic individual to lead the management and continued development of Orkney’s only Auction Market.

About Orkney Auction Mart:

  • A farmer-owned co-operative established in 1993.
  • Sales of cattle and sheep, implements and tools, Orkney books and artwork.
  • Agricultural land and property sales and valuations.
  • Host of livestock shows.

In addition to being an auction market, Orkney Auction Mart is also the following:

  • Working farm.
  • Landlord.
  • Venue for holding meetings and events.
  • A hub for the local community.

This varied role includes:

  • Managing a small team of permanent staff as well as a team of casual staff.
  • Overseeing daily operations.
  • Regularly liaising with, and reporting to, the Board of Directors.
  • Attending and minuting board meetings.
  • Ensuring strategic goals set by the Board of Directors are implemented.
  • Monitoring company finances.
  • Reviewing and implementing operational procedures.
  • Complying with all relevant legislation including, but not limited to:
    • Animal health and welfare
    • Biosecurity
    • Quality assurance schemes
    • Health and safety
    • Employment
    • Insurance
  • Communicating with stakeholders:
    • Shareholders
    • Farmers
    • Butchers
    • Shipping companies
    • Hauliers
    • Local Authority
    • Animal and Plant Health Agency
    • Quality Meat Scotland
    • Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers Scotland
    • National Farmers Union Scotland Orkney
    • Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society
    • Bank
    • Local agricultural groups and societies
    • Local vets
    • Tenants
  • Maintaining and enhancing customer and public relations:
    • Local sellers and buyers
    • Buyers out with Orkney
    • Local community

This permanent post is full time (35 hours per week) although additional hours will be required during peak livestock periods and a flexible approach to working is essential during this time. The salary will be negotiable, based on previous experience, and you will be entered into the company pension scheme.
