A bit about the role

Action for Children’s Orkney service collaborates with Orkney Health and Care, NHS Orkney, Education, the Police and local organisations, supported by funding from Orkney Islands Council, ADP Orkney and The Corra Foundation. The Skipta service aims to assist young individuals and families affected by substance or alcohol use, whether their own or parental, catering to those aged 8-18 years. Embracing a holistic family-focused approach, we extend our support to siblings and families, engaging with various agencies like education, children’s services, CLD, and third-party sectors to ensure a multi-agency approach. We work across the Island and meet the young people either in our work base, in school or out in the community. Our work is child centred.

As a Children and Families Practitioner, you’ll work directly with young people and their families to reduce substance use, improve wellbeing, resilience, and relationships. Whilst providing support around issues such as family conflict, educational challenges, or difficulties in the community. Using a child-centred approach, you’ll offer both short-term and longer-term support, help families adopt positive parenting strategies, and provide follow-up support to ensure lasting outcomes. Referrals are accepted from a wide range of professionals, as well as self-referrals from families and young people.

If you’re passionate about making a difference and supporting children to thrive, we’d love to hear from you.

How you'll help to create brighter futures

  • Monitoring and reviewing the progress of families against their agreed goals and updating plans accordingly.
  • Safeguarding children, identifying risks, and escalating concerns in line with safeguarding procedures.

Vulnerable children in the UK need your help

Wherever you work in the Action for Children family, you'll be helping to change the lives of the most vulnerable children in the UK.
