Excavations at The Cairns site in South Ronaldsay begins again during the summer in 2026, and members of the public are welcome along.

Work at the Iron Age broch began back in 2006 and the dig has revealed some fascinating finds, with structures dating right through to the Norse period uncovered. 2026 will be the final season of excavation here so get along to see the site before it closes for good.

Archaeologists and students will be back on site from June 8 right through until July 17. During the excavation period the site will be open to the public on weekdays between 10am and 4pm. There will also be an open day at the dig on Friday 10 July.
