YORK’S MOST ECLECTIC VOCAL QUINTET COMES TO ORKNEY

The Barberellas are a group of five women from York who, over their fourteen years together, have sung in venues ranging from banquets to Mystery Plays, from festivals and environmental conferences to York Minster. They sing a cappella music transcending genre boundaries: love songs, folk, songs from the shows, pop music, protest songs and, of course, classic five part barbershop arrangements.

Between 13th-19th July they are set to perform a grand total of six concerts around Orkney - including Orkney Distillery, Stromness Town Hall, and the Standing Stones of Stenness - as well as hosting workshops on Eday and Papay and entertaining some residential home residents in Kirkwall.

Barberella, Catherine Heinemeyer, says, ‘We have sung in some really interesting venues in and around Yorkshire over the years but we felt that wanted to spread our wings a little. I spent some very happy time in Papay back in 2001 and have always felt an urge to return, so I was very pleased when my fellow Barberellas shared my enthusiasm for a tour of Orkney.'

The group are donating all the profits from their tour to charity – sharing the proceeds between local charities chosen by the hosting venues, and Practical Action, a charity that inspires people in developing countries to discover and adopt ingenious, practical ways to free themselves from poverty and disadvantage.
