The St Magnus Marathon is the most northerly event of its kind in the UK.

Launched in 2016, the marathon has become a real fixture for runners from Orkney and all over the world.

The marathon is organised by the Birsay Community Association and the route replicates that of the followers of Orkney's patron saint, Magnus, after his martyrdom more than 900 years ago. Starting in front of Kirkwall's iconic St Magnus Cathedral, the course continues its way around the north-west corner of the mainland towards Birsay, culminating near the community hall. It's a challenging but beautiful scenic route through Orkney's west mainland. Entrants can run the full marathon or join a team of three for the Relay event.

Whilst they wait for you at the finish, family and friends can join in the popular St. Magnus 5K Fun Run which follows a circular route around the Birsay Hall, with sign ups available on the day.
