A new body of work by Orcadian artist Sarah Wylie opens at the Pier Arts Centre later this month.

somewhere and nowhere - new work by Sarah Wylie will be on display between 31 August - 9 November 2024.

The exhibition documents the artists exploration of time and space. Using film to capture both still and moving image, Wylie examines ideas of presence, human experience, and the traces of activity which can remain and linger within a space long after it has been abandoned.

Sarah commented “Abandoned spaces are a paradox, both present and absent. These spaces are locations where human existence and activity once were, but now they are marked by emptiness and neglect. They stand as a reminder that change is constant and that all forms of existence are subject to transformation.”

Through experimental photographic techniques, Wylie investigates and documents the decay and decomposition of spaces, creating familiar yet mysterious imagery emphasising the passage of time.

Sarah Wylie is a photographic artist based in Orkney. She graduated from The University of the Highlands and Islands in 2020. Her work explores personal experience through the possibilities of traditional film and alternative photographic techniques.

The Pier Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am-5pm. Admission is free.
