If you visit Orkney in August, you'll soon appreciate that farming is much more than a successful industry.
The Sanday Agricultural Association usually holds its annual Agricultural and Industrial Show on the first Friday in August. The best of the island's livestock - including cows, sheep, ponies and poultry - will all come under the watchful eyes of visiting judges. The dog show will also take place, pitting pretty pets against each other for the top prize!
Orkney's shows are more than a day out for the farmers. They are a huge draw for families who enjoy seeing the animals, catching up with friends, and browsing stalls selling locally produced crafts and goods. There is always fantastic food on offer and often country clothing, fundraising tents and the latest farm implements for sale too.
The smaller shows offer the chance to feel part of a community and there is always something to see and do. Make sure you don't miss out on a great day out for all the family.
