Welcome to the inaugural Orkney Viking Week! We have an exciting week of events, where we can take the time machine back to the old Norse Earldom of Orkney.

The Viking Week programme ranges widely from Falconry, Viking Sheep and Wool, Runic writing, talks, author events, Viking fun and games, to a Viking Exhibition, a Viking Voyage to Hoy, Viking Feast on the Beach and as a grand finale a giant game of the Viking board game Hnefatafl on the beach, with human pieces.

Falconry in the Viking Age: Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th, Monday 19th, Wednesday 21st, Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd. 1.00 pm at Skaill House Falconry, Sandwick (next to Skara Brae) - £10 adults, £8 child/concession

Viking Sheep Experience, Talk & Demonstration with Jane Cooper. Thuesday 20th, Thursday 22nd, Friday 23rd, 10.30 am (1 hour) - £6

Shapinsay Viking Exhibition: Saturday 17th – Friday 23rd, 12 – 4 pm. The Smithy, 5 minutes from the ferry. No booking required, free (donations welcome)

Talk: Viking Shapinsay by Shapinsay Heritage, Arts and Crafts: Tuesday 20th 1.00 pm & again at 3.00 pm. The Smithy, Balfour Village, Shapinsay. Free, donations welcome, no booking required

Vikings Invade the Ness of Brodgar!: Sunday 18th, 11.00 am – 4.00 pm at the Ness of Brodgar. Free, no booking required

Evening guided tour of Viking Kirkwall: Monday 19th, 7.00 – 8.00 pm, meet at Kirkwall Tourist Information Centre. Free, but tips/donations welcome. No booking required

Runes! Talk on “The bear’s tooth amulet from Birsay and other runic inscriptions with magical purposes” and launch of “The Orkney Book of Runes”, with Viking Age music: Tuesday 20th, 7.00 pm – 9.00 pm, St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall. Organised by Orkney Archaeology Society. Free/donations/raffle – booking not necessary, all welcome.

Viking Voyage to Hoy: Wednesday 21st, 9.30 am – 5.00 pm. £60 / £40

Talk: The Men in Maeshowe - Why did they break in?: Wednesday 21st, 7.00 pm – 8.00 pm. Maeshowe Visitor Centre, Stenness. Free, with raffle. Space limited, so booking is essential.

Author event: Lexie Conyngham, Orkneyinga Murders: Thursday 22nd, 6.00 pm at The Orkney Library, Kirkwall. Free event

Viking Feast on the Beach! (SOLD OUT): Friday 23rd 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm, Scapa Beach

Giant human game of Hnefatafl: Friday 23rd, 8.00 pm – 9.00 pm, Scapa Beach. Free event, no booking required
