The fifth Orkney Viking Week will be held between 7-15 September 2024, in indoor and outdoor venues around Orkney.
There is an exciting programme of events planned, where the organisers will take you on a trip back in time to the old Norse Earldom of Orkney.
On offer throughout the week will be:
- Storytelling and falconry at Skaill House Falconry
- The chance to learn about and bake with Orkney's Viking grain, bere
- A special talk on Viking graves in Orkney
- Storytelling around the peatfire at Kirbuster Farm Museum
- Viking warrior school, where participants can learn all about Viking equipment and clothing
There will be a special Family Day on Sunday 8th September at Skaill House Gardens between 10am and 2pm with a range of exciting activities for all ages.
There are a series of hands-on events too. The Craft Day on Sunday 15th September at the St Magnus Centre in Kirkwall will give folk the chance to try a variety of Viking-inspired crafts, including bone pin making, wool crafts, and making chainmail jewellery. Meanwhile, a Viking silver workshop with professional jeweller Andrew Baikie will give those taking part the opportunity to craft their own silver Thor's Hammer - this workshop is available for those aged 18+ and booking is essential.
There will also be a tablet weaving workshop during the craft day too - booking for this is also essential with only four spaces available.
Find out more about the full programme and how you can book in advance on the official website.
Orkney Viking Week is jointly organised by Orkney Archaeology Society and Orkney Time Travel, in collaboration with Orkney International Science Festival, Skaill House, and Orkney Islands Council.
