THE FIRST FLIGHT AROUND THE WORLD - Via Orphir
An illustrated talk and film by Robert Foden of the 1924 attempt to be the first to fly around the world
In 1924 Orkney played a key role in the biggest peace time military operation by the United States – The first flight around the world.
Four aircraft took off from Seattle heading West across the Pacific Ocean, through Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Stopping off in Orkney for several days before continuing their journey across the Atlantic to Canada and the USA to finish their journey back in Seattle. The event attracted enormous worldwide interest at the time and changed the future development of aircraft and the airline industry. This talk and film describes how and why the ‘First Flight Around the World’ took place and how Orkney played a major part, both directly and indirectly.
Another world first for Orkney’s aviation history.
