This year's North Ronaldsay Science Festival offers a varied series of online presentations, talks and workshops so you can take part from the comfort of your own home.

The island's festival group has been busy making and editing videos over the last few months all based on the theme of 'innovation', resulting in ten days of short films. The line-up includes 'Bacteria make plastic fantastic', a presentation from Denmark on exciting recent discoveries of enzymes that break down plastics; 'Past innovations in North Ronaldsay crofting', exploring changes in island harvesting methods over the last 100 years; and 'Westness: improving a landscape for nature', a report on the early stages of a North Ronaldsay habitat conservation project.

Other events in the pipeline include conversations in astronomy, a demonstration on how to make eco-bricks at home, and a how-to-guide on using Zoom and YouTube to create your own videos. There are also presentations on growing trees in the island, recycling human waste to improve garden soil, and a look at the latest in labour-saving farm sileage machines. Island resident James Young shows how he produces and sells home fire logs from cardboard, while Teigan Scott talks us through a day in the life of an online school student.

A new video will be published on YouTube every day until the festival ends on the 14th of March, and each film will remain available to watch at any time.

The North Ronaldsay Science Festival is completely free to attend. Find the festival on Facebook or YouTube and like the Facebook page to be updated on new events. Information on each video will be made available in advance on Facebook.
