'Island Voices' is series of prints created in response to an invitation to Soulisquoy Printmakers from Gabrielle Barnby, Orkney Island Games ‘Scrivener’, to provide images to include in a pocket book that would form part of the participating International Island Games athletes ‘welcome pack’.
Three provocations were provided to provide an initial stimulus. These were literary quotes from the work of George Mackay Brown, Issy Grieve and Harry Josephine Giles, each relating in their individual ways to aspects of Orkney life and culture. Not to be taken literally, nor directly illustrated, the quotes have inspired a wide and diverse range of images and printing media.
Nine of Soulisquoy’s printmakers have met regularly throughout the winter to share and discuss ideas relating to the quotes and seek support in realising their finished prints - Lucy Barnfather, Megumi Barrington Uenoyama, Carolyn Bevan, Laura Drever, Shona Firth, Gillian Johnstone, Joanne B Kaar, Laura Phillips, and Gwyd Williams.
The exhibition is open between June 27 - August 16. The Pier Arts Centre is open Tuesday - Saturday between 10.30am and 5pm all-year-round. Between July 7 - September 7 2025 it will be open Monday - Saturday between 10.30am and 5pm, and on Sundays between 10.30am and 3.30pm. Admission is free.
A ‘meet the artists’ event will be held on Saturday 19 July between 3 - 4pm. Admission is free and no booking is required.
