The John Rae Society's popular open days return in August, giving you the chance to find out more about Orkney's great Arctic explorer.
The Society will host two open days, between 10am and 4.30pm on the 1st and 2nd of August, at Rae's childhood home, the Hall of Clestrain. Visitors will be able to see the progress of archaeological explorations around the building where new discoveries have led to a rethinking of the layout and previous use of these areas. There will also be guides to talk you through these discoveries. The open days are free and everyone is welcome.
Please note: Access inside the Hall will not be possible this year because of COVID-19 and also because the drying out of the Hall prior to conservation has caused some of the timbers to shrink.
Members of the public are also asked to observe social distancing during their visit, and whilst entry is free with no need to book, donations to the Society will be most welcome.
Parking is available on the grass verges in front of the Hall to keep the farmyard clear, but feel free to bring a picnic.
