If you visit Orkney in August, you'll soon appreciate that farming is much more than a successful industry.

The West Mainland Agricultural Show, known locally as the Dounby Show, is one of the main events in Orkney's summer calendar. Second in size only to the County Show, the Dounby Show features everything you'd expect from show day, including the finest livestock as well as fairground rides, crafts stalls, entertainment and plenty of food and drink.

The show begins with the horse section judging, swiftly followed by the cattle, goat, poultry and sheep sections. The West Mainland Flower, Produce & Industrial Show is also open in the Dounby Centre.

Orkney's shows are more than a day out for the farmers. They are a huge draw for families who enjoy seeing the animals, catching up with friends, and browsing stalls selling locally produced crafts and goods. There is always fantastic food on offer and often country clothing, fundraising tents and the latest farm implements for sale too.

The smaller shows offer the chance to feel part of a community and there is always something to see and do. Make sure you don't miss out on a great day out for all the family.
