The Pier Arts Centre's new exhibition will focus on work by Alan Johnston, an artist who has been at the forefront of contemporary art in Scotland since the 1960s.

Beyond The Flow brings together a group of paintings from the 1980s with a series of new works. Johnston will also be creating drawings on site, directly on the gallery walls. The exhibition opens on Saturday 2 April and will be on display until 4 June.

Andrew Parkinson, Curator at the Pier Arts Centre commented “Drawing and mark making are at the core of Johnston’s work and from this simple act of placing pencil marks on canvas, paper, board or the gallery wall, he has produced an astonishing and beautiful series of work.”

Pier Arts Centre Director Neil Firth added “Johnston’s single-minded exploration of drawing and the field on which it takes place has won him a unique place in international contemporary art.”

He continued “This exhibition is an ideal complement to the drawings from the British Museum collection, showing at the same time, and helps highlighting the broad range of techniques and approaches artist have taken to drawing.”

From his base in Edinburgh, Alan Johnston, who taught drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art for over four decades, has exhibited in galleries across the world, including in Germany, The Netherlands and Japan.

The Pier Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am-5pm. Admission is free.
