Romantic spirit alive and well in Orkney
Orkney’s reputation as the UK’s most romantic destination is secure after local residents rose to the challenge to help solve a wedding emergency!
Staff at the Kirkwall Hotel raised the alarm on Monday morning after a couple staying at the Hotel arrived in Orkney minus their luggage, which had been lost in transit.
It’s an inconvenience at the best of times, but on this occasion, the missing bags belonging to Lucia Barrata and John Sessions, who had travelled from the United States, contained a wedding dress, wedding shoes and everything needed for the big day…which was scheduled for today!
Orkney’s famed community spirit soon sparked into life though. The situation was explained on the Kirkwall Hotel Facebook page and the offers of support started flooding in.
Within minutes several pairs of beautiful wedding shoes, sparkling tiaras and even offers of wedding dresses were posted. Brides who had already celebrated their big days shared their dress sizes in the hope that their outfits could be of use to Lucia, and some even offered help with hair styling, make up, flowers and jewellery.
Only three hours later, the Kirkwall Hotel posted a thank you message on its Facebook page. Staff said they had been completely overwhelmed by the kindness shown by local residents. And then the important three words – ‘we are sorted’!
People were then moved to wish Lucia and John all the best for their big moment, which took place under bright skies in Orkney this afternoon – thanks to the generosity and, no doubt, romantic spirit of islanders. Perhaps this is why Orkney was named the UK's Most Romantic Destination by publishers Mills and Boon earlier this year.
There was just one request in return, though. A photo of the happy couple...and they were only too happy to oblige!
