Shopping in Orkney

Orkney is heaven for shoppers. You can pick up some of the very best local food and drink products, high quality jewellery, original arts and crafts and goods from chain supermarkets - all on one short trip.

The Longship and Ola Gorie on Broad Street in Kirkwall

Unlike many rural towns, Kirkwall and Stromness can boast main streets full of independent retailers, from long established grocers, bakers and jewellers to more recent wine, music and book shops and designer shops selling their own textiles, accessories, jewellery, art and other crafts. Orkney also has fantastic country and island shops, stocking everything you need to save you a trip into the two main towns.

Inside an Orkney store full of local products

Many of our craft and gift shops stock brands from outwith the area, as well as their own designs and those of other local producers. You'll be amazed at the vast and sometimes unexpected ranges stocked by some of our traditional shops. There are butchers, bakers, fishmongers and delicatessens, stocking the very best in local produce.

We have lots for you to see as you wander through our towns and plenty of wonderful cafes and restaurants to take a break in.

Fluke Jewellery - one of the destinations on the Orkney Craft Trail

Out and about, you can visit our craft workshops on the craft trail and buy beautifully crafted pieces right where they were made.

There is so much choice that there is often no need to visit the major retailers, but we also have these by way of a major Tesco store, Lidl, M&Co and Boots in Kirkwall and a number of Co-op shops in Kirkwall, Stromness and Dounby.
