Those with a sweet tooth are well catered for in Orkney as the county is self sufficient in craft bakeries and sweet manufacturers.
Shortbread is meltingly moreish made with Orkney butter and there are plenty of Orkney favourites made by all the bakers on the islands. Argo’s Bakery in Stromness makes biscuits, bread, cakes and fancies and recently took over the production of Orkney Fudge. This confection, which comes in four flavours, is well known outside Orkney and here it is the key ingredient of one of the most popular desserts – Orkney Fudge cheesecake. WFM Brown in Westray hit the headlines when it created the Westray Wife shortbread, in the shape of the 5,000-year-old figurine found at a nearby archaeological dig. It also makes Fatty Cutties, a traditional biscuit with currants which hails from the island. Argo's and WFM Brown's products are also available in outlets in Kirkwall. J & AG Rendall in Willow Road is another well supported local baker with a range of innovative and traditional breads and cakes.
Known across Britain is the Stockan and Gardens Original Orkney Oatcake made in Stromness. This is familiar to most in triangles in thick and thin varieties, although round cocktail oatcakes are also made.
