Life in Orkney

Life in Orkney is vibrant and fulfilling.

With our friendly, busy communities, superb sports and leisure facilities, top class education and health care systems, and a thriving arts and culture scene, Orkney offers a quality of life that's hard to match.

Getting around on Orkney’s quiet roads is enjoyable rather than frustrating, as it can be on the clogged-up roads of the UK mainland, with excellent bus and inter-island ferry services ensuring all corners of the islands are accessible. And a wide range of housing is available to buy, from traditional stone homes to modern eco dwellings. Private landlords offer a variety of properties to rent, with social housing provided by Orkney Housing Association and Orkney Islands Council.

Our schools regularly top national league tables and many of our young people go on to study at college or university - Orkney College is part of the University of the Highlands and Islands campus and Heriot Watt University also has a campus in Stromness. Others decide to pursue opportunities in Orkney's diverse business community, whether in agriculture, fisheries, construction, finance, hospitality, tourism, catering, the arts or crafts.

Local health needs are catered for by NHS Orkney, which has links to hospitals and specialists throughout the country, with a brand new hospital set to open in Orkney in 2018.

Orkney has countless clubs and societies who are always on the lookout for new members. Our sports and leisure facilities are also second to none, with everything from swimming to golf on offer, even in the outlying islands. Whatever your sport or hobby, chances are you'll find others in Orkney who share your passion.
